Enjoyed the event
We headed down to Zihua Bay for just before 6. I set up and Dominique orchestrated the positioning of some tables to accommodate the expected company. Once set up I ordered dinner ... a shrimp salad that was scrumptious. Nancy arrived and some friends of hers named Mary and Barry. Not long thereafter another couple, Yota and Dick, arrived and turned out to be those expected with Marc André and Laurent.
I started about 7pm with Harmonium's song by their name and it was well received. I fiddled around with the position of the mic before getting started and after the first number. The place was filling up as I performed until it was close to capacity. I would like to think it's me, but know it is the reputation the place has for good food for good value. I ended my first set just before 8 and sat with the gang for about 20 minutes.
I did the second Harmonium song called Si Doucement during the second set as well as a handful of new numbers I have learned recently. By the time I had finished, Patsy and Bernie were just leaving as were Nancy, Mary, and Barry. We sat at the other table then Dick asked if he could play my guitar.
Before he could get started he concocted a few makeshift picks that were quite the inventions. He eventually broke the end off a plastic utensil and that seemed to work fine. Once he started to play I realized why he needed a pick. His playing was light years ahead of mine and the material he did was very familiar. We gabbed a lot about music and guitars and discussed the 27 instruments in his possession in Canada. I ran through some of my favourite axes and he had some of the in his collection ... Gibson(duh), Fender (duh), one Gretsch, a Takamine, but no Ricky (Rickenbacker). We hung out with these people for about another hour then cabbed it home.
When we were discussing my axe, Dick was intrigued to find I bought it here. We told him about Pepe Guitar on Cinco de Mayo which he did not seem to know about. I mentioned that the input to my Norte guitar is in a bad spot (for me at least) as it interferes with how I hold teh guitar when I play. The spot where the input resides is exactly where I like to rest the guitar body on my right leg. He suggested Irving the huitr mechanic could probably move it into the strap peg on the bottom of the guitar.
So ... one of our missions today when downtown was to go to Pepe's and see if this were possible. Dominique suggested I take the ax with me incase he can do it today. He is able to do it but not until Monday. He is closed tomorrow, planning a trip out town somewhere. Before going to Pepe's, we stopped at a shoemaker's to get a strap fixed on my left Naot sandal. The clip the guy attached was perfect and he went out of his way to treat the leather while we were there to soften and moisten it. This is similar to my rubbing the leather with Dubbin here and there as the leather dries out.
We exchanged numbers with Yota and Dick and I will be contacting him soon to spend some time playing together. So far, Maggie, it's been quite a day.
