Sunday Sunday

Sung to the tune of Monday Monday by the Mamas and Papas. Was a laid back day. After church I met the three and we cabbed it to Los Adelitos cafĂ© ¾ of the way to Playa LaRopa. The food was good but the service was uncustomary poor. That is so not like Maria's place as it appeared that there were not enough staff to handle the crows this morning.

I spent time again today now that I am close to my 3rd appearance at Zihua Bay. I know my audience now and, outside of only one native family, all the tables so far have been occupied by gringos. I worked on a few Bobby Vinton songs as well as Wolverton Mountain, My Way, In the Year 2525, Take a Letter Maria, Good Luck Charm, and She's a Rainbow.

We had Bernie and Patsy for dinner. They were quite tasty. Actually we had one of our famous air fryer chickens. It was nice sustenance and, as always, a pleasure hanging with P'n'B. I was up very late putzing around with a document I am putting together for setting up a rebate program at our online bridge club to increase the size of the games. Colin and I will discuss further when he has a chance to look at the document I send him. This is the gist of what I am proposing:

Now that anyone can play at any club, we are getting more and more 1st time players. The rebate program we are starting entails a transfer of 2 BB$ to anyone who brings a player to the club who has never played here before.

The Bridge Connection (Ottawa) reserves the right to suspend or cancel this program at any time

This works as follows:

Group A:

This includes all players who have played at our club for one or more times. You will receive the rebate for any game you play with someone who has never played here before. Please inform the Director when you believe this applies to you during or after a game with a first-time player.

Group B:

This includes all players who are here for the first time ever. We do our best to track new players by entering their BBO names in our database such that one’s name can be converted to a first/last name in the results on our website.

We do our best to keep on top of the registration of first-time players, but may “miss” a person once in a while.

Since virtual bridge started for us on April 16, 2020, we have gained a reputation as one of the (if not THEE) friendliest games on the planet. We can thank our regular players for that. We also discourage players chatting in table chat with messages including:

  • South ... play!
  • Pard, your turn
  • Clock
  • East ... BID!

Our take on these messages is they can be interpreted by the recipient as rude. We believe this ask of our players is one of many reasons people enjoy our games … after all, at the end of the day, is that not why we play this marvellous game? This type of message (and more) one would not even think of uttering when playing at a club in person.

Most people who play here once, come back again often or here and there.

If The Bridge Connection (Ottawa) errs and has not properly tracked your having invited a first-time player, we will try to do better next time, if indeed this happens. We welcome pleasant (“pleasant" being the operative word) chit-chat about your eligibility for the rebate if you think we missed you … we are VACB185736.
